Studiolo.cas is a space where I explore Calabrian material culture, creative writing, and art.
The term studiolo harkens back to the Italian Renaissance and the decorated private rooms of intellectuals and artists. These rooms acted as studios that both housed their personal collections and were spaces for the contemplation of art, poetry, and writing.
Hobbies, manual skills, and personal interests are just as important as career paying jobs, if not more. In this age of digitalisation we find ourselves being forcibly hurled through, it’s more important now than ever before to engage with and stay connected to the natural and material worlds around us.
There is immense value in the processes of making, creating, and experimentation. Staying engaged with history, creative and craft art traditions, and the natural world better informs our present lives with more curiosity, inspiration, and meaning. And it’s a practice accessible to everyone, to be done in their own unique way.
